What is an Aspect Ratio?
An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an image's width and its height. It doesn't dictate the actual size in pixels (resolution), but rather the shape of the image. It is usually expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, like 16:9 (width:height).
Common Aspect Ratios and Their Uses
- 1:1 (Square): The classic Instagram format. Perfect for grids, profile pictures, and product thumbnails.
- 4:3 (Standard TV/Monitor): The historical standard for older monitors and standard digital camera sensors (Micro Four Thirds). Great for general web photography.
