Best Practices for Naming Image Files for Google Images SEO

The Neglected SEO Factor

Many webmasters spend hours writing the perfect article but fail to optimize their images for search. Google's web crawlers cannot "see" images the way humans do. They rely entirely on text clues to understand what an image is about. The most fundamental clue is the file name.

The Wrong Way

Uploading files named `IMG_8472.jpg`, `Untitled-1.png`, or `WhatsApp_Image_2026.jpeg` tells Google absolutely nothing. You are throwing away valuable SEO potential.

The Right Way

Rename your images to accurately describe their content using descriptive keywords. Treat the file name as a mini-summary of the photo.

  • Be Descriptive: Instead of `car.jpg`, use `2026-red-tesla-model-3.jpg`.
  • Use Hyphens, Not Underscores: Google treats hyphens as word separators. `red-car.jpg` is read as "red car". `red_car.jpg` is read as "redcar". Never use spaces.
  • Keep it Concise: Don't stuff keywords. `red-tesla-car-cheap-buy-now.jpg` looks spammy. Stick to 3-6 relevant words.
  • Add Alt Text: Always pair a good file name with an accurate `...` attribute in your HTML for maximum SEO impact and accessibility.
