Lossy vs Lossless Compression: What's the Difference?
The Two Paths of Compression
When trying to reduce an image's file size, algorithms take one of two approaches: lossless or lossy. Choosing the right one is critical depending on your use case.
Lossless Compression (PNG, ZIP)
Lossless compression reduces file size without removing any actual data. It looks for highly efficient ways to store the exact same pixel information. When the image is opened, it is mathematically identical to the original.
Pros: Zero loss of quality. Perfect for text, medical imaging, line art, and logos.
Cons: File size reduction is minimal. Photographs remain very heavy.
Lossy Compression (JPEG, WebP Lossy)
Lossy compression permanently discards data that the human eye has trouble perceiving. It groups similar colors together and simplifies complex textures.
Pros: Massive file size reduction (often 90%+ smaller). Excellent for complex photographs where perfect pixel accuracy isn't necessary.
Cons: "Generation loss"—if you repeatedly edit and re-save a lossy file, the quality will degrade into blocky artifacts.
The Verdict
For 99% of web photography and social media, Lossy compression is the correct choice. The massive speed benefits far outweigh the invisible loss of pixel data.
